About IMEGE

Education Promotes And Boosts Essential Values

WOMEN FOR EDUCATION INITIATIVE IN EQUATORIAL GUINEA (IMEGE) is an association of people governed by the desire to maximize the interest in the education of people from Equatorial Guinea in general and in girl and women particularly. This initiative is born from the firm belief that education is the ideal tool to promote and boost essential values for the total integration of women in society. Women have been subjected to gender discrimination throughout history despite being half of the world’s population. Fortunately, during the XX century, an important takeoff occurred and the woman began to be valued as an important part of citizenship. Nevertheless, despite the great achievements and efforts made to defend and promote women rights in many parts in the world. Inequalities still exist because the Society has not yet fully accepted the condition of equality between the two genders, given that for long time, women were considered as inferior because in some cultures including the BANTU´s, this inequality became part of tradition.

Education Promotes And Boosts Essential Values

The increasing presence of women in the spheres of power and in the labor market is itself an evidence of the positive progress made by women in this regard; Such integration is a factor of stability, progress, economic and social growth as jobs creator is a key tool to achieve this goal of equality, consequently destroying talent and workforce of more than half of the population is not viable or profitable in any angles, that is to say economic, social, political, etc domains. However, despite progress, one of the most important factors of women empowerment is education, as a tool that is the basis of any human being in the society; not only because it provides stability, also because it opens a range of possibilities and essential facilities for the life and autonomy of any people in the society. As pointed out in the previous paragraph, this Initiative is born from a firm belief that education is the ideal tool to promote and boost the essential and important values for the full integration of women in the Society; Understanding education in the sense of President Mandela, who in his study said “education is the most powerful weapon that can be used to change the world ” convinced of this principle, this association believes that education is a vital tool for social change and total integration of women into social spheres.

Education Promotes And Boosts Essential Values

We firmly believe that education must be the driving force which guides Equato-guinean women in her integration into the spheres of power, aware that even though they have the tools to mandate their rights, they could never fully respect them if they lack the necessary and sufficient training to respect these rights, to identify the scope of these rights, the obligations they entail, and the level of social responsibility they involved. The Millennium Development Goals, agreed by the world leaders at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000, pursue the universal primary education and the end of gender differences in secondary and higher education. These high-level agreements resulted in the emergence of initiatives around the world to increase girls' school enrollment. The changes that have taken place since 1990 have been remarkable, given the obstacles which surged in developing countries. Equatorial Guinea has not been left out of this wave of social change; the realization of this great agreement is clearly reflected in the participation of women in decision-making at the national level, in politics (Senate, Chamber of Deputies, Government, etc.) as well as its high presence in the private sector. In any case, this association thinks that we still have to continue persevering in this line of action using all the tools available.
